Britt, Peters & Associates is looking for a Mass Timber Specialist to join our team. Mass Timber provides a new twist that is rapidly disrupting an industry traditionally slow to change. We have used concrete, steel, wood, and masonry in much the same way for the last century, and it is exciting to experience Mass Timber’s explosive growth. With 12 Mass Timber projects completed or in construction and another 6 in design, Britt, Peters & Associates has emerged as a regional expert in this new and exciting area of the construction industry. The Mass Timber Specialist is a new and unique position for us, so there is no pre-defined role or pre-existing expectations. With this in mind, the specific role will be somewhat tailored to the talent and experience of the selected candidate. Mass Timber is growing quickly, and we expect the role to grow and change at a fast pace as well.
The Role:
Research and Development
• Be familiar with European, North American, and other wood design codes
• Follow relevant research, papers, and theses
• Evaluate new design software and implement as relevant
• Write excel or other programs for specific designs
• Attend and present at industry conferences
• Work with Universities on desired research focuses
• Develop workflows and tools for Mass Timber design
• Explore new framing concepts and materials to advance the Mass Timber initiative
• Work with and contribute to our Embodied Carbon initiative.
Internal Mass Timber Resource
• Provide training to staff on new topics and available tools
• Provide project-specific support on initial concepts, costing, and unique situations
• Provide QC at various stages of all of BPA's Mass Timber projects
• Explore multiple topics related to Mass Timber construction to improve our efficiencies of materials and avoid construction issues
External Mass Timber Expert
• Build and maintain relationships with key industry connections such as CLT manufactures
• Pursue architectural clients in the Southeast
• Pursue contractor clients
• Provide speaking opportunities on Mass Timber
Project Management
• Create schematic concepts to convey and vet innovative structural solutions
• Active involvement with client meetings
• Provide creative solutions to architectural and construction issues and constraints
• Perform initial conceptual then final detailed structural design and documentation
• Perform calculations including static/dynamic finite element modeling
• Manage the work of junior engineers and designers
• Develop and maintain project schedules in conjunction with the project teams to meet milestones and completion dates
What you Bring:
• Thorough understanding of the mass timber industry
• Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with multiple stakeholders
• Strong negotiation skills; ability to influence and persuade others to reach consensus
• A track record of building successful teams and promoting teamwork through motivating and coaching; skilled in facilitation, mentoring, and conflict resolution
• Proven ability to grow market share within the engineering arena
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to develop and maintain relationships with clients
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
• Strong decision making/problem-solving skills
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; Masters preferred
• 2+ years of industry experience and/or a Master’s Thesis on Mass Timber
